01/02/2022 The Art of Priming Attention
What’s the difference between these two sentences?
1. “Here is my update …”
2. “The most interesting point in my update is …”
The second sentence will get more attention because it’s more intriguing. It suggests that something interesting is coming up. This technique is called priming attention.
Priming is the art of stimulating the attention of an audience by using specific words, vocal techniques or body language to boost their attention. It can also frame how information will be perceived.
Here are some simple techniques you can easily incorporate into your communication to prime your listener’s attention:
- Use your voice to emphasize key words. Pause for 3 to 5 seconds just before or after you say something important. Make sure your body language, gestures and appearance are aligned with what you are saying.
- Become more word conscious and choose words deliberately and carefully:
Positive prime: The good news is…. (Anything said after this will be perceived as good news)
Negative prime: Unfortunately… (expect bad news to follow)
Getting attention: This is important/new/fascinating. I need your full attention,
Summary prime: Finally / In conclusion / This is my key message
Now, wasn’t that an interesting post? 😉
